Yes, Nancy Pelosi is clueless. So, what's new?

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) seemed unaware that several of her former staffers have gone on to lobby for big corporations Thursday on The Daily Show. The exchange with Jon Stewart went something like this: 

Pelosi: "I don't know if any of my staffers have gone to work for federal contractors."
Stewart: "I do."

Ugh.

No, women don't make only 77 percent of what men in comparable jobs make. It's a long-discredited lie the president told and one that he keeps repeating.

A 'Level of Incompetence Larger Than What It Should Be'

...and that comes out the mouth of Jon Stewart.

   The Daily Show's Jon Stewart grills HHS Sec. Kathleen          Sebelius.

On Monday, The Daily Show's pressed Health and Human Services Sec. Kathleen Sebelius about issues he has with the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"), from the website bugs to the one-year waiver businesses received that individuals didn't get. (He repeatedly chased that last point and was noticeably frustrated at the lack of a clear response.)

Stewart did not receive an answer after asking how many people signed up for the website, before bringing up the "legitimate criticism" about individuals not receiving the one-year delay. Stewart said it looks like "you were favoring small business," and despite Sebelius attempting to explain that this is only a small percentage of businesses and small businesses have no mandates, Stewart still couldn't figure the logic out.

When he went to commercial break, Stewart asked, "Can we come back and ask some more questions? Can I ask the same one?"

In the second part of the interview, Stewart kept going, calling the issues with Obamacare "frustrating" due to the "level of incompetence that's larger than what it should be." He pointed out that businesses are cutting worker hours to exploit a loophole in the law, but Sebelius said that's not true. Stewart also wondered if they could actually run it well, pointing out the issues the government has had managing the VA.

And then, very briefly at the end of the show, Stewart expressed his exasperation with the non-answers, and even wondered aloud if Sebelius was lying to him.

Gee, Jon, ya think?

Do as she says, not as she does...

It's what's expected...

The Daily Show's John Oliver interviews Froma Harrop, the president of the National Conference of Editorial Writers, to find out how to restore civility to America's public discourse.

The results are informative, instructive and hilarious.

Late add on the subject: From the Wall Street Journal's "Best of the Web," which is churned-out by the skillful James Taranto -

Remember Froma Harrop, the civility scold and Baroness Catherine Ashton look-alike who called Tea Party congressmen "terrorists" and couldn't understand why anyone found this hypocritical? She provided us with lots of material last summer and now Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" has recycled it into comedy gold, somehow persuading her to sit for an interview in which she looks utterly ridiculous. You have to watch it to believe it.

A colleague who did watch it posed an interesting question: Was she playing the straight man, or is she really that oblivious? There's no way to know for sure, but based on our back-and-forth with her last year, the hypocrisy and cluelessness ring entirely true.

On the other hand, in previewing the show yesterday on her personal blog, she suggested she was in on the joke: "It's a comedy sketch, needless to say, and the joke will be on me." Then a follow-up comment: "Sure, much of my careful reasoning ended up on the cutting-room floor, but it was fun."

There's no doubt that it was a skillful editing job, but in our dealings with Harrop, she has never proved herself capable of careful reasoning. Our interpretation is that she realizes, at least after the fact, that she looked foolish and is rationalizing it by saying it's only comedy. The true explanation is some combination of obliviousness and the desire to get on television. We are not confident that we can accurately estimate the precise balance of those two factors.

When Nancy Pelosi has lost Jon Stewart...

...she's lost.

Within a week's time, her conduct in office has been the focus of "60 Minutes" and she's made a fool of herself on "The Daily Show." Not bad. Not bad at all.

Regarding the latter, former House Speaker and current Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., attacked Republicans for their opposition to debt ceiling increases, but defended President Obama for voting against a debt-ceiling increase when he was in the Senate, during an interview with Jon Stewart. Her effort to reconcile the two positions drove The Daily Show host to distraction. You can see the video below. (Note Stewart's face palm...)

He's just different...

From England's The Daily Mail: "Outspoken politician Dennis Kucinich is known for his anti-war views, veganism and statuesque British wife. But it appears the diminutive 64-year-old Ohio Congressman can add another even more bizarre string to his bow - he is also an accomplished ventriloquist. Appearing on Thursday's Daily Show, Kucinich demonstrated the bizarre talent in a mock interview." (See video below...)

The story goes on to explain that, "He has twice run for president, garnering little support and leaving him open to criticism that his candidacies were mere 'vanity' projects."

While the piece does a good job of explaining Kucinich's political career and, um, hobby, it neglects to mention his previous reports of an encounter with a UFO."

A UFO encounter would explain a lot about Kucinich and his, um, hobby...
