Wait, what? We want to give other nations more say - especially over free speech? A free press?
The story continues: “Other nations have been mobilizing against ICANN.
What a brilliant idea! I mean, especially since so many other nations - including some we call "friends" - are just as dedicated to freedom as we are. I'm sure this will all end superbly.
After all, when countries like Egypt, Libya and China have control over the Internet, they've been nothing but wonderful. Right?

A line in the sea...
Two months ago, as the Cheonan – a South Korean naval corvette – cruised through the international waters of the Yellow Sea; a North Korean submarine fired a torpedo at the Cheonan. The device struck the South Korean vessel amidships, tearing it in two. The ship quickly sank and 46 sailors of the Republic of Korea lost their lives in the unprovoked attack.
Now, after a thorough investigation by international teams, the proof is there for the world to see: divers recovered pieces of the easily identifiable North Korean weapon and the evidence has been presented to the world. Despite having known from the get-go that their brothers to the north had attacked their nation, South Korea held judgment until all the corroboration was in.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s response to South Korea’s revelations was to – predictably – call its neighbor nation and those involved in the investigation “liars.” Also quite predictably, Pyongyang ratcheted-up tensions by putting its military on high-alert, conducting maneuvers and cranking-up its propaganda machine (spewing threats of all-out war against South Korea and its allies). For its part, “South Korea banned trade with its neighbor, said it would take the sinking to the UN Security Council and announced a resumption of propaganda broadcasts from loudspeakers at the inter—Korean border.”
In addition, various trip-wire safeguards (which no one really ever believed the North would adhere to) have been scrapped by the communist nation. As the Voice of America and others are reporting, “In a sharp escalation of tensions with South Korea, North Korea says it is discarding military procedures the two sides have agreed to follow for years to ensure a conflict does not get out of hand.”
The remains of the South Korean corvette...Also worth noting is South Korea and the U.S. revealing that four North Korean submarines – the kind the DPRK typically uses for inserting special forces troops or saboteurs into the South – were detected leaving their bases. (As worrying as this is, it is a clear message from the allies to North Korea that “we know where you are and what you’re doing.”) In response to the attack, the sub launches and the North’s announcement it would no longer allow safe passage through neighboring waters, “South Korea's navy conducted anti-submarine warfare drills off its west coast. South Korea and the United States have announced they will conduct a joint anti-submarine exercise, widely expected to take place within a matter of weeks.”
As the UN Security Council prepares to cogitate on the situation, North Korea’s patron – China – is said to be working behind the scenes to protect its puppet in Pyongyang, perhaps even offering the U.S. a deal that would finally bring sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program in exchange for softer treatment of the thugs of North Korea. This, however, will not go over well in Seoul. It will not sit well with a nation that has endured 60 years of attacks, terrorism, extortion and all forms of criminality. And it will not sit well with the families of the 46 sailors massacred on March 26 in the Yellow Sea.
South Korea, which has gone out of its way for decades to seek a peaceful reunification of North and South Korea, has always viewed its northern neighbors not as an “enemy” but, instead, as a “brother.” With the sinking of the Cheonan, however, that has all changed. As the BBC reported, “Thousands of protesters have gathered in Seoul to denounce North Korea's threats against the South, amid heightened tensions between the two countries.” South Korea’s leader, Lee Myung-bak (a solid, no-nonsense head of state with a backbone), has promised to take stern action against the North Korea.
North Korea has a history of inflicting violence on South Korea and then threatening worse when the light of day shined on their misdeeds. Once again, now that the world knows what Kim Jong Il’s regime has done, the Hermit Kingdom’s mad leader is trying to bully his way through the fallout. As noted, it doesn’t look like the South will stand idly by and let their sailors’ deaths pass as mere “incidents.”
The South is not going to back down and North Korea, which only has its willingness to commit violence to stand on when it comes to any form of credibility, is going to believe its hand is being forced.
These are dangerous times on the peninsula – perhaps worse than any since the Korean War itself. The difference this time is that the stakes are much, much higher. Let’s face it: North Korea, a nation ruled by a megalomaniac, possesses nuclear weapons and has threatened to use them – this should not be taken lightly. In addition to the human toll a renewed conflict would take, much of the world’s economy depends on that part of Asia: South Korea, Japan, and China. An all-out war would likely create devastation/havoc and throw the world into a vortex previously unseen.

Exposing junk science, political agendas and lies...
In “Climategate,” the newest bestseller addressing the hot potato of environmental science – so-called climate change (formerly known as global warming) - author/noted meteorologist/radio host Brian Sussman does all this and more as he skewers lying politicians, know-nothing celebrities and pols, agenda-driven media, cash-grubbing scientists, and institutions intent on shifting power – and money – away from the United States.

Chief among those targeted for Sussman’s laser-sharp critiques is former U.S. vice president/author/climate change bloviator Al Gore. Throughout the book, Gore’s intentions, sloppy science, Academy Award-winning PowerPoint presentation (“An Inconvenient Truth”) and “green scare” moneymaking ventures, are squarely in the author’s crosshairs.
What distinguishes Sussman’s dissection of the man and the movement (which has transformed from a socio-political movement to one that now bears close resemblance to a secular faith) is a strong reliance upon – and professional understanding – of science. Unlike Gore, who only knows what he’s been told or what he wants to sell, Sussman knows the science front-and-back.

Al Gore attempts to tie Hurricane Katrina to climate change...
While Climategate - the scandal that erupted last year over emails at the UK’s East Anglia Climate Research Unit casting doubt over many “warmists’” claims - helped give Sussman a title for his book, you should know this is something he’s been working on for several years now. (If only Gore & Company had done as much research/fact-checking as Sussman.) The fact that several other climate change-related scandals/frauds/hoaxes have recently come to light only serves to strengthen his arguments. Some of the nails he hits on the head:
- Since 1972-73, DDT – one of the safest and most effective pesticides ever created – has been banned…chiefly as the result of the landmark eco-jeremiad, “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson. Banned after being falsely accused of endangering wildlife, its absence has had significant negative impacts (such as the hardly-ever-reported-on 96 million related deaths attributed to malaria).
- The 2009 America Clean Energy and Security Act : "Buried in the 2009 America Clean Energy and Security Act are federally mandated energy-efficient building regulations, which supersede all local and state codes and which will be enforced by a national, green goon squad, funded in part by revenues from energy taxes, as well as by an annual $25 million from the Department of Energy 'to provide necessary enforcement of a national energy efficiency building code. The legislation also authorizes the Secretary of Energy to 'enhance compliance by conducting training and education of builders and other professionals in the jurisdiction concerning the national energy efficiency building code.' The plan is modeled on building code enforcement in California. Each time a home is built, remodeled, or – in the case of the federal plan – preparing to be sold, a G-man wearing a federal badge and armed with a clipboard will show up at your house to make sure ... all of your appliances have been updated with the most recent Energy Star-approved internal communication devices, and that the Home Area Network has been properly installed and connected to your new SmartMeter, whether you like it or not. This is not a helpful plan to assist you in meeting your family budget; it's a social engineering scheme, designed and promoted by the federal government to change your behavior. By having the capability to read your meter many times a day, the utility company is able to effectively establish demand pricing schedules; thus, using too much electricity during the peak periods is going to cost you."
- "The term SmartGrid [made law in 2007] refers to a distribution system that allows for flow of information from a customer's meter in two directions: both inside the house to thermostats and appliances and other devices, and back to the utility. … Once the…SmartMeter [is] connected to the SmartGrid, Big Brother will become the new authority figure in your home. Want to do a load of laundry or read at 3 p.m. on a hot afternoon in August? Good luck. With a bureaucratic keystroke, anything attached to your [home] could be selectively turned off – or on – without your approval."
- President Barack Obama, as a board member for the Joyce Foundation, voted for a $1.1 million grant to launch a privately owned "Chicago Climate Exchange."
- There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.
- How science has been willingly corrupted by activists with Ph.D.s.
- Who stands to make billions of dollars off the global warming scam.
- What really has happened, is happening and will happen with the earth’s climate.
- Why political leaders and government bureaucrats are determined to limit the amount of energy available to the people.
- How the United Nation’s policies are driving U.S. environmental law.
Even if you do buy into Gore & Friends’ take on the Earth and our environment, this is a book worth reading. It will at least help you better understand why the leaders of your movement have taken their respective/collective positions and where the information came from that informs your own beliefs.
For those of you who are skeptics, cynics or opponents, “Climategate” provides ample data, history and other information vital to illuminating the debate over climate change and advancing the argument that the threat posed by the deceits of those less interested in the Earth and more invested in separating ordinary citizens from their money (and liberties). Sussman has gone beyond the duty of a scientist/meteorologist and stepped in where "the Fourth Estate" and those charged with safeguarding freedoms should have -years ago.
“Climategate” is published by WND Books ($24.95).
Brian Sussman signing "Climategate"...
Sussman/"Climategate" bonus: Gore came to Monterey last week to give one of his $85 a ticket (bottom price) "lectures." Sussman - and a few hundred friends - were there to greet him. The interviews in this YouTube video are worth the price of admission...alone:

Raising (hell with) Arizona...

Several weeks after its passage (and later amending), Arizona’s controversial immigration law continues to be…controversial – to say the least. From the Phoenix Suns (er, sorry, Los Sols) to President Barack Obama, everyone seems to have an opinion – even if they don’t know what they’re talking about (or if they’re just being cynical and playing the race card)...
Yesterday, America’s second-largest city (and arguably the largest Mexican-populated city in North America), Los Angeles made a statement. After a morning of grandstanding, the LA City Council voted to bar official travel and contracts with Arizona. What’s the immediate impact of that? According to LA city officials, it is believed that approximately $8 million in contracts can be canceled, immediately, without any legal repercussions. In the long-run, it’s estimated that losing the City of Angels’ official business will hit the Grand Canyon State to the tune of about $50 million-plus, annually. As Officer Vic (who I appeared with on the Brian Sussman show on KSFO-AM 560 this a.m.) put it, “…glad to see they got all those potholes taken care of.”
LA’s decision runs counter to the sentiment being expressed nationally according to a number of polls. A new poll from the Pew Foundation shows that, “Fully 73% say they approve of requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them.” Is anyone listening?
The controversies continue to build this week as “Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill targeting ethnic studies, hours after a report by United Nations human rights experts condemned the measure. State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson school district's Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people. Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.’It's just like the old South, and it's long past time that we prohibited it,’ Horne said.” (h/t: Yahoo!/AP)
All of these resolutions and polls, however, are meaningless – at least in the sense that the law will eventually be ruled on by the U.S. Supreme Court down the line. According to numerous experts, including the man who helped co-write it, the chances of it being upheld are quite good.
We shall see…
Late addition: Wouldn't it be nice if the nation's chief law enforcement officer, the U.S. Attorney General (Eric Holder) actually read the Arizona statute before criticizing it? According to a Washington Times story, Holder is quoted as having expressed concerns about the law but he really can't explain anything about the law because he "hasn't read it." He also, prior to asking his staff to read it and brief him on what it means, said the law's passage was "unfortunate." Why is that, Mr. Holder? If you haven't read it and don't know what it says, how can you honestly criticize it?

Just... follow the money
Bob Woodward: What do you mean? Where?
Deep Throat: Oh, I can't tell you that.
Bob Woodward: But you could tell me that.
Deep Throat: No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know, and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can, but that's all. Just... follow the money.
(“All the President’s Men,” an Alan J. Pakula film, 1978)

He told us how to find the truth...
If you are one of the millions who faithfully await “delivery” of this blog each day, then you already know I’ve expressed skepticism about global warming and, even more so, its proponents.
Chief among those I’ve skewered has been former Vice President/Nobel Laureate Al Gore. As previously noted at The Bliss Index, “The New York Times ran a story on how Al Gore is "poised to become the world’s first 'carbon billionaire,' profiteering from government policies he supports that would direct billions of dollars to the business ventures he has invested in."

The money man explains it all (and absolves you of your carbon sins...at a price).
And that’s my chief reason for being so skeptical about the global warming – now renamed, “Climate Change” – movement. It’s all about the money.
Let me give you some examples:
- From a personal standpoint, I witnessed the connection between concerns over the environment and the desire to cash-in on those worries via government mandate. Several years ago, I took part in a Silicon Valley summit comprised of representatives from key companies and industries throughout the region. The first part of the conference dealt with various environmental issues. The second (more important) part featured the presence of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. During his time there, he told the executives he remained committed to protecting California’s environment. At that point, the business leaders began asking him how he could help them – “…and California businesses” – by pushing through legislation that would mandate the citizenry use their “green” products and services. It wasn’t about getting good science or finding out what would be best for the environment, it was about using the force of law to extract as much money as possible from the public.
- The idea of “carbon trading” was created for one reason only (and it's in the name): trading...ie.: making money. Back during the Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic church earned the ire of folks like Martin Luther for selling indulgences (essentially, profiting from “clearance sales”…i.e.: profiting off the act of absolving sins). Following a time-tested method, the Climate Change profiteers have been scaring the hell out of people by scaring the fear of hell/warming into them. And as a way of making money off these fears and alleviating guilt, they have sold The New Absolution: carbon credits. Official “exchanges” have been established to handle carbon credits. They are not unlike other institutions like the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ…well, except for the fact that unlike those established financial trading floors, the carbon exchanges don’t actually trade anything real.
- International climate accords – as well as the United States’ own “Low Carbon Economy Act” (LCEA) and “Cap and Trade” plan – have significant portions devoted to the redistribution of wealth (and have nothing to do with climate change, global warming or weather). Earlier this year, “one of Gore's leading scientific resources, Goddard Institute for Space Studies chief James Hansen, sent a letter to Barack and Michelle Obama specifically urging the president-elect to enact a tax on carbon emissions that would take money from higher-income Americans and distribute the proceeds to the less fortunate.” (h/t: Newsbusters) Here is a video of Hansen “advocating a green distribution of wealth scheme.” Tom DeWeese of the American Policy Center in a recent issue of his DeWeese Report observes, “It is a political movement led by those who seek to control the world economies, dictate development, and redistribute the world's wealth." (h/t: America’s Future).
- The United Nations is involved. (Need I say more?) In March of this year, it was discovered that a “United Nations document on ‘climate change’ that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave…envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.
The UN has their eyes on your prize(s)...
Now the latest wave of evidence against the “Warmers” has hit. As the New York Times reported today, Hundreds of private e-mail messages and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change. The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics, and casual comments — in some cases derisive — about specific people known for their skeptical views. Drafts of scientific papers and a photo collage that portrays climate skeptics on an ice floe were also among the hacked data, some of which dates back 13 years. As noted skeptic James Delingpole writes in The Telegraph UK: “[Is] Climategate: the final nail in the coffin of 'Anthropogenic Global Warming'? When you read some of those files – including 1,079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be ‘the greatest in modern science.’ These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory – suggest: Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.”

The most damning of the hacked e-mails...
Notably, the emails also allegedly show that significant sums of money – millions and millions of dollars – bought the “findings/evidence/findings/consensus/opinions” of numerous “experts.”
Surprised?
"Just... follow the money..."

Arms ship? What arms ship?
According to the Associated Press, "Israeli officials tallied up hundreds of tons of weapons seized from a commandeered ship Thursday as Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas denied Israeli claims that the arms were meant for them."
Everything wasn't "ship-shape"
Hezbollah has, of course, denied any connection. Of course.
Israel accused Iran of violating a UN arms embargo by hiding 36 containers filled with a wide range of weapons among hundreds of containers of civilian cargo on a ship heading to Syria.
"The bulk of the shipment included rockets intended to hurt Israelis and kill as many civilians as possible," said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "This constitutes a war crime. The UN General Assembly should have investigated and condemned this crime and the UN Security Council should have convened a special session to debate this incident. Iran intends to commit this war crime again in the future."
According to a very reliable source, he was "told that the ship was not unique; most of the arms have been tagged for Beirut and Syria and then redirected. I asked why now?" He didn't get an answer...but is expecting one, soon.
"Israel accused Iran on Thursday of violating a U.N. arms embargo by hiding 36 containers filled with a wide range of weapons among hundreds of containers of civilian cargo on a ship heading to Syria."
"The bulk of the shipment included rockets intended to hurt Israelis and kill as many civilians as possible. This constitutes a war crime. The UN General Assembly should have investigated and condemned this crime and the UN Security Council should have convened a special session to debate this incident," Netanyahu said. "Iran intends to commit this war crime again in the future.
But there are two solid bets as to "why now?"
1.) Iran fears Israel (and/or the U.S.) could try and put an end to its nuclear weapons program. The Obama administration has been trying to get Russia to take Iran's uranium, but that effort has gone nowhere. Meanwhile, the Iranian "street" is getting restless - further worrying the Imams - and Iranian Baluchs are setting off bombs with or without the help of (pick one): the CIA, the Mossad, Pakistan, that cranky old man down the street. The internal chaos is only fueling the urgency of the Mullahs' desires/efforts to develop nukes - which they've promised to rain down on (pick one): the infidels, the Jews, that cranky old man down the street. "Arming-up" might signal that the Iranian leadership thinks its final battle is drawing closer.
2.) Iran plans to draw attention away from its nuke efforts (thus buying more time) by supplying arms throughout the Middle East, but particularly in Lebanon where another Hezbollah offensive against Israel would kick into high gear in coming months. In addition to serving as a diversion, it also would be a key test of the new administration's resolve - and ties with Israel.
Either way, this is a signal we should all be paying attention to - closely.
According to JTA, "The German-owned ship operated by a Cypriot company was en route from Iran to Syria with a planned stop in Beirut, according to Israel's Foreign Ministry. It carried arms including Katyusha rockets, assault rifles, grenades and mortar shells, as well as an advanced anti-aircraft platform, Israel Radio reported."

"A former Iraqi official estimated yesterday that more than $13 billion meant for reconstruction projects in Iraq was wasted or stolen through elaborate fraud schemes."
Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is visiting the United Nations and using the opportunity to spew more ___________ (fill in the blank). The weasel says the world can take a flying leap. Iran is going to build all the nukes it wants. Note to Iran: You know that "doomsday clock" on the wall? You don't really set the time on it, Israel does.
